Aenor Validates Sustainability Strategy
Barcelona, 13/04/26
Ametller Origen has become the first Catalan retail group to obtain the Zero Food Waste certification from Aenor. This recognition validates a management model strictly oriented toward the prevention of food waste.
The seal certifies efficient surplus management, product valorization, and a commitment to continuous improvement, ensuring business activities are aligned with international sustainability standards and European circular economy directives. Furthermore, it bolsters consumer trust at a time when traceability and environmental responsibility are becoming critical purchasing factors.
The company complements this achievement with the Zero Waste seal, which accredits an advanced approach to waste management and the responsible use of resources throughout the production and distribution cycle.
Surplus Management and Social Impact
The Ametller Origen model integrates food surplus management with high-impact social initiatives.
Currently, the group collaborates with over 30 social organizations; in 2025, it donated 238,000 kg of products, the equivalent of nearly 8,000 shopping carts.
On the production side, the company channels surplus fruit and vegetables through the Espigoladors Foundation, while products manufactured at its central kitchen are distributed to social entities. This approach reduces waste while generating social value across the board.
Commercially, the group promotes measures to extend the shelf life of food, including donations of fresh products near their expiration date, discounts to prevent food waste, and active collaboration with platforms such as Too Good To Go.
Food Retail and the Circular Transition
Obtaining both certifications strengthens Ametller Origen’s position as a benchmark in sustainable food retail, aligning with regulatory demands and consumer expectations.
The model is consistent with international initiatives such as Agenda 2030 and European Union policies, consolidating a strategy based on circularity, operational efficiency, and environmental impact reduction.
In an environment of increasing pressure on costs and resources, food waste management has become a strategic pillar for the sector, both for its economic impact and its reputational value. In this context, Ametller Origen positions its model as a reference for distribution operators, Horeca, and the broader agrifood chain.
